Lost Shadows

Annie Smith's Memoir
The Escape

We’ve made it out. 7 were lost in the escape, but it was still better than I anticipated.

304 of us have completely lost our memory. The first thing we all remember is the explosion. Since then, the Knights seem to think we are the threat. We are the victims here, and their treatment of us is deplorable. Death row inmates get better treatment than we did.

With the help of Rocky and his brother. We orchestrated an escape. I don’t think it would have gone over as well if it weren’t for my fellow cell mates. I knew that Ludo would have come in handy with the guards, but I had no idea what brutality was within little Salem…

Once we got to the safe-house we began to organize. I believe it was Conrad who coined the term “Find the Lost”. He’s been a great help in putting together a movement. That boy is clever.

Together with some of the activists we are setting up safe-houses to try and reintegrate us back into society. I will stay well hidden as we need someone to the represent us to the public. The others will remain anonymous so they can blend into society.

We have long days ahead…

So far I have no memory, though I hear some people get flashes in dreams.

Now we look to the future. I am encouraging others to keep a diary as well, I feel like it will end up important and maybe unlock clues to our past.

From the Desk of Conrad Kline

…We have only just returned from Falcon’s home and begun settling down for the night. The drive was filled with a silence too heavy and a mood too somber. We have seen death, brought it upon others swiftly and with little remorse, but tonight was the first time we’ve had a hand in causing agony.

…his hair, his skin, curling and blackening under the heat, becoming greasy dust we all no doubt inhaled a portion of. His presence in my body, whether real or imagined is simultaneously sickening and comforting. He is death itself, a viscous necrosis that might calcify in my lungs, fill them with fluid and drown me from the inside, but if he is within me-us, he is not forgotten. He is not…lost.

My thoughts become increasingly morbid the longer I dwell on our condition and that of our interned brethren. The News Feed suggests that our governor could make the call to let the rest of us free, but he stays silent. I cannot fathom the kind of man that watches his own citizens suffer unduly without comment. He hasn’t stated his opinion on the situation of The Lost publicly. Rumors circulating say that he would have the lot of us done away with. I would think better of him if he had the balls to admit to that opinion. Our escape would certainly have been seen in a more favorable light. As it stands, we live in like refugees, changing houses every few days, fearing not just for our imprisoned comrades, but for ourselves. Today’s little excursion made good on that fear.

It seems Knight Errant is hiring. They’re looking to the unfortunate ex Lone Star employees to help fill positions needed to keep 24/7 watch and care of nearly 300 individuals. It also seems that a special few are being sent to hunt us down. Three of our own were kidnapped and nearly returned to Knight Errant’s holding facility. If we had been more than a few hours later, I think we might have truly lost them…and there’s no telling what little Maidus might have done then.

That leads me to the curious incident that occurred just before one of our bounty-hunter friends met his death by fire. At some point, one of the three captives (I assume it was Maidus, but I was a bit indisposed at the time) projected a memory into my mind. It was of the time just before the explosion, I’m certain. She saw Salem and a few of the other Lost Ones I recognize. There were some curious figures behind a tinted window too high to see clearly into. I caught a glimpse of a troll that closely resembled Ludo. He wore a security guard’s uniform, I think. The description of his clothing from his initial inspection suggests that this is the case. Curious. I do not recall seeing myself or Susie-Q…

Alas, all this brooding is giving me a monstrous headache. I think I’ll have some tea and go to bed. I promised Susie-Q that I would help her work on advancing our home’s security system in the morning.

Warmest Regards,

-CK

We did it! We got them out!

It took a while, but it was worth it. They even let me DO something for once. Well, a few weeks ago I went with the gang to that fancy resturant (I HAVE NEVER TASTED FOOD SO GOOD…. I think… hah). I cleverly put a camera on Fuzzy (may he Rest In Peace) to follow and see what Brackhaven was up to… I don’t think I can ever get that image out of my head.

Anyway, with all the footage we got of Brackhaven scheming and sexing we managed to “convince” him to let the rest of us go from prison. I can’t believe he is being told to keep the lost imprisoned… I wonder who runs his sex bot…

…He may be kinda heartless, but not even he likes his dirty laundry aired out in front of his family. I was kinda hoping to let it go public though, he can’t be allowed to sell people out like that. He needs to be brought to justice…

…He even pardoned those of us that escaped. Now maybe I’ll be able to leave this stupid apartment and get out in the city. Annie says soon I’ll be able to go to school and get to be my own age. Mingle. UGH. I don’t care about school. I wanna help out. People “my age” (which is what again?) are juvenile idiots. At least the few of them I have met. Screw them. I wanna help, I wanna do something meaningful…

…They don’t like me asking too many questions about the resistance. It’s only when they can use my skills that they seem to care. Once they’re done they just lock me away in the house like they don’t know I exist. I’m nothing but a nuisance. At least Ludo seems to care…. and Conrad and Salem too….

… I had the dream again (obviously). But this time was different. This time I remember.
